During the first years of school children learn to read and build comprehension skills. South Jamaica Reads works with children to provide one-on-one or individualized assistance to ensure literacy success for young readers.

Children’s Literacy Enrichment

Literacy Inc. (LINC) engages families and community members to support young readers in high need neighborhoods. LINC harnesses the power that exists in every community to make literacy a value and right of all children. LINC’s Reading Buddies Program pairs 5th grade students to read with 2nd graders at PS 40, PS 48, and the Cornerstone South Jamaica Community Center once per week, for 45 minutes. LINC also partners with the South Jamaica and Baisley Park branches of the Queens Library to offer literacy celebrations to elementary school children and their families.

Read Alliance improves the chances for academic success of children reading below grade level by ensuring they possess the foundational reading skills necessary to read grade-appropriate text and catch up to their classmates. Read Alliance’s afterschool program offers first grade students at PS 40 and PS 48 with one-on-one reading instruction and homework help twice per week for 45 sessions. Students who receive Read Alliance intervention average more than a full year’s growth in foundational reading skills.

Reading Partners helps students become lifelong readers by connecting community volunteers to elementary schools and empowering these volunteers to provide individualized one-on-one tutoring that produces tangible improvements in students’ reading skills. Volunteer with Reading Partners work with 1st and 2nd grade students at PS 48 twice per week for 45 minutes to ensure students will have the literacy skills needed to reach their full potential in the classroom and beyond.

Parent Engagement

Literacy Inc. (LINC) engages families and community members to support young readers in high need neighborhoods. LINC parent engagement workshops at PS 40 and PS 48 provide families with resources and information on how to support literacy development outside of the classroom. Parents are shown fun ways to incorporate literacy into daily routines, how to use the surrounding community as a resource, and how to make a daily reading routine fun for the entire family.
