In the later elementary years, 85% of what is learned in school depends on a child’s ability to read well. South Jamaica Reads works with students and families to sustain reading success.
Children’s Literacy Enrichment & Parent Engagement
Literacy Inc. (LINC) builds neighborhood networks to support young readers by partnering with families, educators and community stakeholders to surround children with books and fun, skill-building reading opportunities. LINC’s Reading Partner Program pairs 5th grade students to read with 2ndgraders at PS 40, PS 48, and P.S. 160 once per week, for 45 minutes.
LINC also partners with the South Jamaica and Baisley Park branches of the Queens Library to offer literacy celebrations to elementary school children and their families.
LINC parent engagement workshops provide families with resources and information on how to support literacy development outside of the classroom. Parents are shown fun ways to incorporate literacy into daily routines, how to use the surrounding community as a resource, and how to make a daily reading routine fun for the entire family.
